Assessing Site

The beginning of all Stained Glass starts with site assessment, to determine the type of ambience, lighting and environmental factors that will help to formulate a design. Along with an initial idea from a customer these are melded to come up with an artwork that will complement and enhance an interior. Sometimes Stained Glass is useful to block out an ugly view and replace it with something beautiful whilst still allowing the interior space to be lit with natural light.

Design Process

The design of Stained Glass can sometimes take up to 25% of the time spent on the artwork as a whole; there is often a lot of research and preliminary sketches used to formulate a final design. The challenge is to turn an initial idea from a client into reality and a stunning finished artwork. There are also many complexities built into the design to allow for certain previously unachievable shapes to be made achievable, through clever placement of lines. A well balanced design of shape and colour is what is so important to achieve the right ambience and feel for the interior that it is being designed for.

Cutting & Assembling Glass

Cutting glass is not as mechanical as it sounds; each separate piece of glass is treated as something special. Each colour is carefully selected and often a certain part of a sheet of glass is selected over another part of the same sheet to add to the artistry required to come up with the best possible Stained Glass in the end. Assembly requires the use of built in reinforcing and strengthening. Also the use of lead lines of different thickness, some creative and skilled soldering and sometimes the use of quirky additions add to the finished artwork.

Installation

Lastly and most eagerly awaited is the installation, this is when an interior becomes transformed and all the ideas have finally come to fruition. The completed project is a satisfying one and will not only add value to the building but is a beautiful permanent or in some instances transportable artwork for a lifetime and beyond.
